Why you should read it: Storm Grant set out to write a book about stolen shadows. Who better to star in such a story than the most famous shadowless character in the history of literature, Peter Pan? But this is no children’s fairy tale. This is a mashup of a detective novel, horror story and modern-day romance. The book begins with a prologue set in Neverland as Peter Pan sees his first helicopter. Peter gets the mother he has always wanted and then we fast-forward to chapter one, with Peter Pan finally all grown up.
How can a shadow be stolen? Why would anyone else want it? What happens if you don’t have a shadow? What happens if you get the wrong shadow back? All of these questions and more are answered in Lost Boys 2.0. I don’t want to give away spoilers because the great enjoyment of the book comes from discovering the answers right along with Thad and the other “real world” characters. I can tell you that most of the stolen shadows come from children and it turns out that taking one from an adult like Thad is terribly painful, and right out of the best of the genre of horror stories.
As Thad and Peter work together to not only find Thad’s shadow, they are also trying to prevent further shadow thefts. One of the major results of not having a shadow comes into play and makes the investigation even more difficult. Shadow theft turns short-term memory loss on its ear with a completely different kind of amnesia.
I loved the way Ms. Grant developed the nuances of this story. Lost Boys 2.0 is a character-driven book wrapped in an intricate plot that runs smoothly. I enjoyed seeing how the former forever-boy Peter Pan functions as an adult. He’s still got some of the characteristics of a fun-loving child, but he’s all man now (wowza!). Regular guy Thad, whose POV tells the tale, is a wonderful main character and partner to Peter’s superhero persona.
Storm Grant has put together an entertaining story about what our shadows mean to us and how losing one can lead to losing our souls and how others see us. This is an amazing paranormal book that had me enthralled from the appearance of the whirling metal dragon in the prologue to the epilogue that ends this book and begins the next. I can hardly wait for Mysterical, Tales of B.O.O. No. 3.
